Cleaning Up Credit History

Cleaning up credit history is one of the best ways you can improve your credit score. Improving your score is vital if you want to be eligible for loans or any kind of competitive financing rate.  If anyone puts enough effort and patience into cleaning up credit history, they can do so themselves with ease. One of the best ways to clean up your credit history is to order a copy of your credit report from Experian, Equifax or Trans Union and review it to see if there is any incorrect information contained within the report. If there is information on your report that is incorrect, you can dispute it to attempt to raise your score.

An important fact to remember when disputing things on your credit report is that, in the end, if you are unwilling to agree on a settlement amount with you debtors at any time, then cleaning up credit history probably isn’t in your near future. You also want to remember that this process takes time, so if you are planning on trying to improve your credit score before you apply for a loan, you’ll want to do so quite a few months, at least six, before you fill out the application for the loan, since it can very well take around 30 or up to 60 days to see any of the results of your hard work. Of course there is always the option to hire a professional company to help you, which will probably produce quicker results, but will cost you.

Some other important information to remember when starting the process of cleaning up credit history is that if you have credit history at all, even if it is bad, you are still in better shape than someone who has no credit history at all. The primary function and purpose of a credit report is to prove that the person borrowing has established a healthy credit history of making payments sufficiently. The best kind of borrower is one that has made purchases, taken out loans and opened lines of credit, but has also had no late payments on those loans and credit lines and has stuck to the contractual terms of the loan. The worst thing you can do to your credit score is to become lazy when making payments or to default on a loan which can lead to bankruptcies, collections or other judgments. If you already have negative payment history on your credit report, it may be to your interest to wait a year to make any big moves until you can show 12 full months of no late payments etc. Your credit score is determined by 35% of your payment history, 30% of how much debt you have, 15% of your length of credit history, 10% of how much new debt and credit you are taking on and 10% of the types of credit you are using and applying for and if it is a healthy mix.

Cleaning up credit history can be a daunting task, especially if you have let you credit go by the wayside. But, the good news is that it is not hopeless! If you are willing to take the time and effort, you can clean up your credit yourself or even hire a professional to help you. It is very important to educate yourself about how a credit score is determined in order to know what the best next step is. With a good sense of awareness and even a little patience, cleaning up credit history can be just a few months away!
