Social Security Replacement Card Header

Social Security Replacement Card

Social Security was built into our government system back in 1935 and was introduced into society as a social insurance or social welfare program to protect the disabled and unemployed. We each buy into the system through taxes taken out of our paychecks. Our Social Security cards and numbers are used to identify us in many ways as well and are used for these verification purposes in relation to our credit. Since our Social Security numbers are tied so closely to our credit score, it is important for us to be careful how and when we give out our number and also be careful not to misplace them, causing us to need a Social Security replacement card.

It is important to realize and treat our Social Security numbers as some of the most confidential information we have. You should keep your card in a place that is safe, possibly with your other important documents and papers so that you know where it is at all times. This will help to minimize the likelihood of losing it or having someone steal it and having to register for a Social Security replacement card. The worst place you can put your Social Security card is in your purse, where the chances of it being lost or stolen increase rapidly because of the number of times you take your purse into public.

If you are one of the unfortunate people who have lost your card or have had it stolen, you should immediately contact your local Social Security office to sign up for a Social Security replacement card. You can find your local office by researching on the Internet.  If your card was stolen and your credit was harmed because of it, there is unfortunately, nothing the Social Security office can do for you to straighten it out. You will have to work with a credit repair company or some other form of credit repair to in order to get your credit back on track. If you have not yet experienced this type of credit fraud, but you suspect someone of it through a suspicious phone call or letter, contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 to report it. No one from the Social Security offices will call you and ask you to you’re your number out over the phone because specific privacy acts restrain them from doing so without your written authorization.

The Social Security offices work hard to make sure your number is protected. Do your part to prevent having to sign up for a Social Security replacement card, by making sure you keep your card in a safe place and take caution when giving out your number. If you do lose your card or it is stolen, you can get a Social Security replacement card by going online and filling out the SS-5 form for “Application for a Social Security Card.” They will mail you a new card as soon as they have all of the information they need and are able to verify your documents. Don’t forget that you are limited to only 3 replacement cards a year and up to 10 in your entire lifetime, so don’t be careless with your card!
